Central Swimming - Grand Prix - Taupo 4/5th September
Last weekend approx 8 swimmers swam at the BOP Champs in order to qualify for the Central Swim Grand Prix finals which are to be held in Taupo on 4th & 5th September. The Grand Prix finals are only for the top 16 swimmers in the region in each event regardless of age - so open age groups - except for the long distance (800 & 1500) where they only take the top 8 swimmers. After some fantastic swims over the weekend we have had the following swimmers qualify and the races they will be swimming:
1: Katherine Penny - 800free; 400free and 50 back
2: Anna Hewitt - 50breast; 100breast; 100IM
3: Naomi Smi - 50free; 100free; 50back & 100back
4: Sam Kettle - 200back; 400IM; 1500free & 200IM
5: Emily Roberts - 50back; 100back; 200back & 200IM
Congratulations to these swimmers and if you want to see some top swimmers from the Central area of NZ then go to Taupo in 2 weeks and see the action. This will be a main build-up event for National Age Groups and also National Open Champs in November.
East Coast Champs - 11/12th September
This is the next meet on the calendar and entries will close for this on Saturday 28th September (yes this Saturday). Eligibility sheets are on the downstairs noticeboard at the pool. Please highlight the events you wish to swim - remember Senior entries are 12yrs & over and are $7.50 per event; Juniors are 11yrs & under and are $6.50 per event.
ALL EVENTS ARE TIMED FINALS - there are no heats and finals as in the past for the Juniors.
If you wish to swim you MUST be a financial member of the Club AND have paid your $75 SwimNZ fee. You cannot swim if you are not registered.
Greendale Meet

Upcoming Meets
Don't forget that to check the Calendar for upcoming meets. The next one is the BOP Champs (13yrs & over only). Eligibility sheets for those qualified swimmers (13+yrs) will be on the downstairs noticeboard tomorrow (Tues 3rd). As usual, if you are attending highlight the events you wish to swim. Jo will be removing the sheets on Monday 9th August so please ensure they are done by then.

Junior Nationals Squad

Meet Calendar
The calendar on the website has been updated with the new meets (now that we have the dates). Robyn Ward also has a copy which she will distribute to Little Devils members and there is also a copy on the downstairs noticeboard. We will try and keep this as up to date as possible.

Little Devils Liaison
The Little Devils squad now has two liaison people to help communication between the parents and committee. Robyn Ward (mother of Kody) and Vanessa Abraham-Smith (mother of Cullen & Kenah) have kindly offered their services and have joined the committee. Queries about anything to do with the Club should be directed to Robyn & Vanessa and if they don't know they will certainly find out. You can still approach any Committee member if Robyn or Vanessa are unavailable so there should be plenty of people around to help you.
HB Swimmer Development Programme
Another reminder for those involved in this programme that the next session is on Saturday 17th July. Team 1 is at Napier Aquahawks (7-9am); Team 2 is at Clive (6-8am) and Team 3 is at Sundevils Flaxmere (7-9am). Don't forget to take all your gear incl fins; board; paddles; pull buoy etc. Also those attending Aquahawks, don't forget you have to pay to get IN to the pool.
C Squad changes - Term 3 2010
An email has gone out to all the C squad members regarding changes for next term. If you have not received this email please let me know and I will forward it on to you. Please let Andy know what your commitment level will be - don't reply to me. Andy will let everyone know what the changes are as soon as he has heard from everyone.
A & B Squad 'Hell Week' - 12-16th July 2010
Just at reminder to email Andy and let him know which days you are UNABLE to attend (if any) during Hell Week camp. The squads have had the itinerary emailed to them and it looks like there'll be plenty of fun to be had as well as lots of hard work.
6 Region Meet - Palmerston North 27th June

Prizegiving - Friday 25th June 2010
Congratulations to those that won trophies at last night's prizegiving and to those who got their first Club Championship certificates. Well done and hopefully seeing all those fantastic trophies on display and hearing some of the stories that went behind them will encourage everyone to put the effort into both training and racing.
A huge thankyou to Pat Benson (President) and Leonard Kay (Chairman) for organising a wonderful venue and meal. I hope it gave everyone a chance to meet new people (both parents and swimmers) and to have some social time together.

Taupo Accelerate Your Points Meet - 12 & 13th June 2010
Jo has yet to get an entries file for this meet, hopefully she will have one by next week. She will then put an eligibility report up. Just fill it in the same way everyone has for the club champs. It's the easiest way to select your events.

I know it's hard to believe but the first meet of the new season is the Aquahawks Relay meet on 23rd May. If you wish to take part in this meet, there is a sign-up sheet at the pool. You can make up your own teams so when you have got your team(s) together, put it on the sheet. If you want to take part but don't know anyone to make up a team with, put your name up in the individual column and Jo will endeavour to get you into a team. Names & teams to be on the sheet by Fri 14th May.

NZ Representative - Megan Watson
Congratulations to Megan Watson who is in the Tri squad with Tim and has recently been competing in a number of events - Kinloch; Takapuna and Oceania Champs in Wellington. She was 3rd in her age group in Kinloch; won her event in Takapuna and won the overall series for the Contact Tri's for her age group in Wellington.
Because of these fantastic results Megan has been selected in the NZ team to compete at the Triathlon World Age Group Champs in Budapest, Hungary in September 2010.
What a wonderful effort from Megan and I hope that everyone will take the time to catch up with her and wish her all the best. Congratulations also to Tim for coaching her and to the Tri Squad for some great results in the last few weeks

Up & Comers Meet - Sunday 28th March 2010
Attached here is the flyer for the Up & Comers Meet on Sunday 28th March to be held at the Flaxmere Pool and also at the same time in Gisborne at the Enterprise pool.
Swimmers qualifying for Junior National, NAG, Div 2 or Open Championships are not eligible to compete.
Swimmers who medal at HBPB Summer Championships are not eligible to compete in that stroke, this includes relays.
Clubs may enter beginning or novice swimmers.

2010 Summer Champs

We had a great time, even if it was abit wet for the first 3 days!! The photos of the men was the mixed relay team stunning the other clubs with their 15m win!! Well done to Andy, Amy, Julie Williams & Adrian Barclay - great swim.
The mens relay team of Adrian Barclay, Jamie Keenan, JD Hewitt and Geoff Roberts came a creditable 5th in their race. Some of these photos are also up at the pool on the lower noticeboard by the lockers. Check out the mens relay team 'warm-up' tactics!!

Meeting with Andy - Monday 25th January 2010
Thanks to all those who turned up and met Andy (officially!). It was a good meeting and everyone enjoyed the finger food and got talking. A couple of points raised at the meeting were:
1: Amy is going to be staying on, on a part-time basis! Great news.
2: There are no minimum or maximum number of sessions for children to attend, however if you are unsure of what would be best for your child, please contact Andy via email or phone the pool and have a chat to him.
3: If you have ANY concerns regarding coaching, please see Andy, Tim or Reece at the pool or contact them via phone. They would prefer that you talk to them direct and not amongst other parents on the side of the pool.
4: The new schedule will take effect from Monday 1st February 2010. For the rest of this week training is as it has been over the holidays:
A & B squads - 3.30-5pm (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri) 7.30-9.30am Saturday and 5.45 - 7am Mon, Wed & Fri mornings
C squad & Little Devils - 5-6.15pm (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs & Fri) 8 - 9.30am Saturday mornings

Welcome to the second half of the 2009/10 season! I hope everyone had a great break over Xmas and enjoyed the New Year's celebrations, where-ever you may have been.
Training has been underway since 5th January with slightly earlier times that during the term. Everyone should have received the emails regarding this and the slight adjustments to training times while Andy & Amy are away with the team at Summer Champs.
Good luck to everyone attending Summers in Gisborne starting tomorrow. Safe travelling and look forward to some great swimming over the next few days.

Last training session for 2009
Our last training session for 2009 will be on Wed 23rd Dec - all squads to be at the pool by 4.30pm and we will finish around 6pm (possibly slightly earlier). It will be a fun night, plenty of relays and lots of xmas cheer to be had (lollies etc for the kids). Parents are more than welcome to come down and join in.
Uniforms
We have the shirts, we are still waiting for the shorts from the screenprinters. As soon as they have arrived we will get them out to all those that ordered. The delay has been out of our hands with the Canterbury suppliers who also do the screenprinting. We know that everyone wants them especially with Summers coming up and we are doing our best.
If anyone is interested in ordering a long training jacket for the winter months then please email Meryn and let her know. They come in 12, 14 & 16 children's sizes and small, medium and large adult sizes. If you are unsure about which size to order, ask one of the kids who already have a jacket to let you try it on. The last time we ordered they were $103 each and then you have the cost of the embroidery of the Club logo on the front and optional whether you put the child's name on the back - it does make it easier to locate the owner of each jacket when they are all in a heap on the ground!! I think the total cost for the embroidery earlier this year was around $30.00.
Summer Champs entries
Jo Karlsson is trying to get the entry sheets to Amy so swimmers attending Champs can get their entries done before we finish for Xmas, unfortunately there have been problems with the team manager file from Gisborne and it still hasn't been fixed. We will let you know as soon as we have entry sheets. A reminder that there is a maximum of 11 events that each swimmer can swim.
New Coach - Andrew McLay (Andy)
Our new coach has been appointed - Andrew (Andy) McLay from Christchurch. Andy will be starting on Tuesday 5th January and an email will be sent out regarding training times during January (as there is no learn to swim programme).
Andy comes to us from the Wharenui Club in Christchurch where he has been the senior coach since 2005. Amy will be staying on for January and working with Andy to ensure a smooth hand-over. Both Andy and Amy will be attending Summer Champs in Gisborne. Andy's qualifications etc have been posted on the website under the Coach section.
Raffle
Thanks to all who sold tickets and to Sharon Burfield-Mills for organising the raffle. The winner was a friend of Gina & Wim Smit. Congratulations to Gina & Wim for selling the winning ticket. We raised just over $400. A big thanks again to Richard Wilson for making the mirror for us.
Xmas Party
We had a great day on Sunday at Ocean Beach. The weather co-operated and the kids (big and small) really enjoyed it and I know I certainly enjoyed watching the relays - Arona's tackle on Tim in the beach flags being my highlight!! My thanks to Brenda, Jo K, Lisa Burns, Lisa Hulena (bartender!) Gina, Julie, Bridget, Arona, Geoff Roberts, Brian O'Hanlon and Adrian Barclay for organising the relays, cooking food, making salads and giving the kids a great time. Also to Tim, Amy and Steve Watson for joining in with the Sharks team and the great team captains. A big thanks to all parents who bought the kids out and I hope you all enjoyed the bbq and hopefully met some other parents.
The results of the house competition:
Dolphins - 49; Sharks - 18; Piranhas - 57. Well done to all those who turned up. These points have been forwarded to Jo Karlsson who is keeping a tally of the various house competitions so the house winner can be presented with the shield at next year's prizegiving.

Comet Meet
Entries have been done for the Comet meet and entry fees are due to be paid by Friday 4th December 09 otherwise the $5 penalty fee will apply. Amy will be attending this meet, so good luck to all swimmers attending and we hope you get good weather!
Raffle
Please get your sheets from Sharon Burfield-Mills and get them sold and the money and sheets back to her ASAP. We would like to be able to draw this raffle before Xmas and it would make a great Xmas present for someone - particularly a teenage girl!!
Xmas Party
Xmas party will be on Sunday 13th December 2009 at Ocean Beach surf clubrooms. Time yet to be decided. Click here for house teams. If the weather is not good enough, I will send an email to everyone in the morning advising that the venue will revert to the pool. Let's hope the weather holds for us. The party is for ALL club members, including families (brothers, sisters etc) so bring everyone and I'm sure we will have a great day.
2010 HBPB Summer Champs - Gisborne
The Summer Champs will be held in Gisborne at the Olympic pool (where Comet meet is held) from Thurs 14th Jan to Mon 18th January (inclusive). Thursday is long distance (800 & 1500m). Entries for Summer Champs have to be done before we break for Xmas so if you are attending, please let Jo Karlsson know and then see Amy in the last week before Xmas.
2010 Manawatu Age Group Champs
For those that might be wishing to obtain a qualifying time for NZ Junior Champs the last chance to qualify is at the Manawatu Age Group Champs. Click here for their flyer. It will be held in the Makino Pool, Feilding which is an outdoor 50m pool. If you think you might want to attend this meet, the entries have to be sent in by Tues 20th January (the day AFTER Summer Champs) so best to do tentative entries with Jo Karlsson before Xmas and you can then confirm or change or delete them on the last day at Summer Champs.

Coach
Felipe will be leaving us this Saturday (14th). He is returning to Brazil with his father for medical treatment and we wish him all the best and a speedy recovery. There will be no training on Saturday so Felipe's last day will be this Friday 13th November.
We have a wonderful temporary replacement coach starting on Monday 16th. Her name is Amy Vaughan and she has been the assistant coach at Aquahawks for a couple of years and they are very sad to lose her. She is at the same SwimNZ coaching level as Felipe, she is also a qualified primary school teacher and has a Bachelor of Sport & Recreation. We are very lucky that Amy is so well qualified and Aquahawks understand our position and have released her quickly - especially given the time of the year!!
Other information:
For those swimming at Waipukurau on Sunday, Reece will be coming down as our coach. Please don't forget to pay your fees into the entries box at the pool by Friday (13th) otherwise a $5 penalty fee will be imposed. Warm-up for Sunday will be from 8am so please be at the pool (Waipukurau) around 7.50ish with your blue team shirts & shorts. Also, it is a 2 session meet but there is only 1hr between sessions so remember to bring a picnic lunch to have on the sports fields behind the pool.
Thanks to Richard Wilson of Showcase Furniture who has made a wonderful full length dress mirror and donated it to the Club to be raffled. If you want to see the mirror, it is upstairs at the pool. If you haven't received your raffle sheet to sell, please contact Sharon Burfield-Mills on 8709366 or 027 4262891. We are only expecting 1 raffle sheet PER FAMILY to be sold (10 tickets). If you have sold yours and can sell more please get more sheets from Sharon. Obviously the more tickets we sell the more money we raise which will go towards more equipment for all club members. We would like to be able to draw this before Xmas so please pick up your sheets and support your club.
Xmas party
The Xmas party this year will be at the OBK Surf Club at Ocean Beach on Sunday 13th December and will consist of some House competitions and relays and then a bbq lunch for everyone. The Club will provide the food for the bbq (meat, salads and desserts) and soft drinks. So bring your sunhats & sunglasses, sunscreen and lots of smiles. We will have a great day for everyone. As we get closer to the time we will let you know about times etc. Every swimmer will be put into a House team and you will get points for the house with the most team members there, so when the teams are announced (which will be in the next 2 weeks) make sure that you get as many of your team members there as possible.

SwimHB Meet - Waipukurau 15th November
Just a reminder, if you want to swim in this meet, your names must be with Jo Karlsson by now. It is the same as Greendale meet in that there is only a 1hr break between sessions so make sure to take a picnic lunch to have in the Park.
Training - Saturday / Monday morning
There will still be morning training on Saturday 31st October but there will be NO MONDAY morning training on the 2nd November for the A Squad.
Greendale Meet - 1st November 2009
The Greendale Spring Meet is on this Sunday, 1st November 2009 at our pool. Warm-up is at 8am so please be at the pool by 7.45am.
Please note that there is only a 1hr break between sessions so make sure to bring your lunch as there's not really enough time to go home - unless you live close.
Trojan Meet
A very successful meet especially for the new swimmers in Little Devils & C Squad. Sharp relay swims enabled us to come first and second in the kickboard relay and the 4 x 25m freestyle relay. We hope that everyone enjoyed their day.

2010 NZ Junior Champs
Attached here is the 2010 NZ Junior Champs information including qualification times and schedule. It would appear that the 2010 Champs will be run the same as previous years EXCEPT that there will be no 'free' event. Swimmers can only swim those events they have qualified in.
